Nairobi - Normal learning activities may grind to a halt in early January 2024 after the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) issued an early strike warning.

KUPPET secretary-general Akelo Misori protested the failure of the government to employ Teachers Service Commission (TSC) educators hired on contract terms.

"The reason why teachers who were even on the contract were not considered for employment when the employment was announced was that they already had a one-year contract," Misori said.

Speaking to KTN News, Misori said that the government had promised to absorb the teachers on a permanent and pensionable basis.

"But now we are duped. So, this other new thing is what people think the unions are sowing. So, if they want us to sow seeds, this is what we do best. So, if they want us to go to the streets, they better know that for the better part of next year, there will be no learning," Misori added, saying something must be done on the matter of junior secondary.

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that teachers hired by TSC on contract terms have stagnated in their positions for a long time.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke after demanding answers from the standing committee on education regarding the fate of these teachers, nominated senator Esther Okenyuri regretted that this was happening in this age and era.

“This afternoon on the floor of the Senate I have sought a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Education on career growth paths for teachers hired by TSC on contract terms,” Okenyuri said.

What Esther Okenyuri wants TSC to do for teachers

In the statement, Okenyuri said the committee should state the total number of teachers employed by the TSC on non-permanent and pensionable terms and state how many per year of recruitment.

“Also, explain whether these contracts employed teachers are not eligible for employment by TSC on permanent and pensionable terms during regular replacement recruitments within the TSC, and if they are not eligible give the reason for their discrimination,” said the UDA nominated MP.

The youthful senator who co-chairs the Trade, Industalisation, and Tourism Committee also wants the standing education committee to elaborate on the career growth path plans in place by the TSC to grow and advance the careers of these young contract-employed teachers.
