Kenya Power Confirms Electricity Disruptions In Nairobi, Kiambu Amid Public Outcry: "We're On It"

• A blackout rocked parts of Nairobi and Kiambu counties on Sunday, January 7, leaving most Kenyans in darkness
• Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) confirmed that supply lines serving those areas were off
• Kenyans have taken to social media to express their anger, despite KPLC's assurance that it was working to restore power

Nairobi - On Sunday, January 7, Kenyans in various parts of Nairobi and Kiambu counties were left without electricity after a power blackout.

Kenyans took to social media to express their frustration at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) over the power outage.

What KPLC said about the power blackout

Some said they lacked power for 24 hours, but the KPLC had not issued any statement regarding the blackout.

However, in a statement, the power distributor confirmed that several parts of Nairobi and Kiambu counties were experiencing outages.

KPLC confirmed that the line serving Kenyatta University Ruriru Campus, GSU Camp Ruiru, Kimbo, and surrounding areas was off.

In Nairobi county, the supply line serving Fedha Estate, Telaviv, Tassia, Hunters and environs is also off

"Supply line serving: Kwihota, Kihunguro, Murera, Ruiru, Gatongora, Kilimambogo, Kamakis, Mitikeda Ruiru, Karuguru near Eden Academy and environs is off. We are on it," KPLC said

Ndumbuini, Kanyariri, Kabete Vetlab, Uthiru, Kinoo, Kwa Mugo Njathaini, Uthiru 87, Gakobu, and surrounding areas are also affected.

How Kenyans reacted to power outages

While assuring Kenyans that they are working to restore the power, KPLC apologised for the inconvenience caused by the power blackout.

"Hello. We are aware of the fault and are working on it. Inconvenience caused is highly regretted.," KPLC stated.

The statement by KPLC follows an outcry by Kenyans in the affected areas.

"It's the 7th day of 2024 and we're already on our 3rd blackout. Heh, KPLC stays consistent."

Ruto's directive over power blackout

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy was given firm instructions to deal with the disruption of electricity supply lately experienced throughout the country.

President William Ruto, who chaired a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, December 13, expressed his displeasure with the outages, which he said were hurting Kenya’s investment profile.

The matter was deliberated on during the meeting, after which it was resolved that the transmission line system would be unbundled to reduce the impact of failures of select parts on the whole country.
