A motorist who recently made a road trip from Kenya to South Africa has offered a comprehensive low-down into what it takes to make the adventurous journey.

In a lengthy thread shared on X, Victor Matara shared of him in Nairobi and Mzansi, followed by his lessons and notes about the trip.

Research before traveling

He started by advising those seeking to make such sojourns always to withdraw money from the ATM and buy a local SIM card in the country they are in.

The withdrawal charges are incredibly high, but being connected ensures one can keep in touch with the world.

He added that thrill-seekers should also research the host country's rules beforehand, like in Namibia, where motorists are expected to always keep their lights on during the day.

"Failing to do so could result in a 1000 Namibian-dollar (KSh 8,000) fine. The authorities argue that this is a safety measure to reduce accidents," he wrote.

To avoid speed fines in Tanzania, strictly keep it below 50kph when approaching market centres, towns, schools, and zebra crossings.

Country-by-country comparison

He compared the experiences in the countries he traversed during the long road trip, starting with the destination, South Africa and finishing with his homeland.

Matara praised South Africa for its beautiful landscapes, especially in the Western Cape region, adding that it was the most advanced country he had ever visited in Africa.

According to him, Namibia is a stunning country but has slow internet speeds and came with the surprise of long deserted roads.

"Lesotho, the kingdom on the hill. Interestingly, their currency has the same value as South Africa and has the most beautiful women on the continent. Trust me on this one," he wrote.

Kenya's internet speeds lead in Africa

He says Tanzania stood out for its exceptional hospitality, good roads, and affordable food, while Zambia was notorious for toll roads and fees.

Malawi had kind and welcoming people, Lake Malawi was a spectacular sight, and the country had the cheapest internet rates.

"Kenya has the best internet, which you will definitely miss as you travel further south," the comparison concluded.

Man drives from Nairobi to Paris

In an almost similar occurrence, Kim Musau was praised on social media after making a daring road trip from Nairobi to Paris in a Land Rover.

Musau drove through a host of countries and cultures for six months, covering over 10,000 kilometres.

The expedition came with challenges, including bureaucratic processes at border crossings, navigating rugged terrains, and adapting to ever-changing weather patterns.

Photos of him standing proudly in front of the magnificent Eiffel Tower with the Kenyan flag received praise online.
