Nairobi - Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome over alleged police brutality during protests.

During an interview on Citizen TV, Mwangi regretted that, as a country, we never hold police officers accountable for their illegal actions.

“I think the problem is we never hold the police accountable for their actions; the last four weeks have been a mess, there have been a lot of murders by the State and I think the officers involved should be held accountable,” Mwangi said.

According to the activist, many innocent Kenyans were killed during the anti-government demonstrations under the watch of the police.

Boniface Mwangi says Japhet Koome unfit for office

Mwangi said Koome should take responsible for the action of the police and resign from the service.

“There should be a prosecution of the people involved and I think Japhet Koome should resign because, under him, innocent unharmed Kenyans were murdered in cold blood murder," he added.

Mwangi blamed the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leaders for failing to block Koome from being appointed police boss.

According to Mwangi, the opposition should have used the parliament to oppose Koome's appointment, given his alleged history of dealing with protesters.

"There is a rogue militia in the police service. On Athi River some people came with Subarus that had no number plates and were shooting everywhere. I think Azimio are failing by not talking about these things in Parliament. Azimio also failed by allowing Koome to become the IG," he claimed.

30 people died during protests, Amnesty International

Amnesty International Kenya put the Kenyan Police force on the spot for killing protesters during the protests called by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.

In a hard-hitting statement on Thursday, July 20, the rights lobby group demanded that individual police officers and their commanders be prosecuted for excessive force.

"We demand urgent investigations and prosecution of police officers and their commanders for excessive use of force by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and the Director of Public Prosecutions,” their statement read.

They disclosed 30 deaths attributed to police brutality since the opposition demos started in March this year.

"Since the March 2023 protests, Amnesty has noted at least 30 cases of police killings of protesters. They include March 20, and March 27 (12 killings), Saba Saba protest (12 killings) and yesterday's July 19th (six killings). The deaths have been attributed to suffocation from tear gas and lethal shootings,” the statement read.
