British Woman, 40, Donates Womb To 34-Year-Old Sister: "Sisterly Gift"

• A young lady who was born without a womb was over the moon after she successfully received her sister's in United Kingdom's first-ever uterus transplant
• The 40-year-old donor was ready to offer her womb, having established a family of her own with two lovely children
• The historic surgery, which was carried out by over 30 doctors at Churchill Hospital in Oxford, lasted over 17 hours

A woman has expressed her unwavering sibling love as she donated her womb to her younger sister, who was born without one.

The two British ladies whose names were withheld were recuperating well after the successful uterus transplant.

Uterus transplant at Oxford

This was the United Kingdom's first-ever womb transplant by surgeons at Churchill Hospital in Oxford, as reported by NDTV.

The 40-year-old woman was glad to gift her 34-year-old sister her womb since she already had two kids, which was enough for her.

The historic surgery, carried out by a team of over 30 medical professionals, lasted for close to 17 hours, led by Richard Smith, a gynaecological surgeon.

"I think we were all tearful afterwards. It was incredible. It was probably the most stressful week in my surgical career, but also unbelievably positive. The donor and recipient are over the moon, just over the moon.

I’m just thrilled that we’ve got a donor who is entirely back to normal after her big op, and the recipient is, after her big op, doing really well on her immunosuppressive therapy and looking forward to hopefully having a baby. The whole thing was emotional," he said, as reported by Wales Online.

The anonymous recipient was born with Type 1 Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser. This condition causes the uterus to be underdeveloped or absent, although external genitalia are normal, as pointed out by MedlinePlus.

Australian woman receives mum's uterus

Similarly, an Australian woman got her mother's womb in a historic uterus transplant.

Kirsty Bryant, a mother of one, became the first Aussie to undergo a uterus transplant donated by her 56-year-old mother.

Bryant applied for the clinical trial after she lost her uterus in a life-saving hysterectomy due to major bleeding after the birth of her daughter.

Bryant and her husband Nick desired to expand their family and hoped their dream could become a reality after the successful transplant.

"I would have biological children, but I would not carry them. That was the last thing I wanted to hear, that I would not be able to get pregnant again," Bryant told 60 minutes.
