"No More Blood, No More Blood": Chaos In Parliament As MPs Clash Over Debate On Police Brutality

Nairobi - The National Assembly was temporally halted on Thursday, July 27, following mudslinging and chaotic scenes between Azimio and Kenya Kwanza allied MPs that snowballed into a train wreck.

Kisumu West MP Rozaah Buyu had moved a motion of adjournment regarding reported police brutality in various parts of the country.

Kimani Ichung'wah in trouble

The debate took a political angle as the Kenya Kwanza Alliance lawmakers opposed the motion while those on the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party supported the motion.

Trouble started after the National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah accused political leaders from the Nyanza region of using the community to fight on their behalf.

In his remarks, Ichung'wah accused Nyanza leaders of orchestrating bloodshed in the region for personal gains.

"As leaders, we must declare enough is enough. No more blood should be shed in this country; no more blood should be used as a currency for political negotiations.

I dare ask how much violence is enough? How much bloodshed is enough? I say this because I see a number of you leaders from Luo Nyanza and I want to look at you straight in the eye and ask you how much blood is enough? How many bodies do you want us to count before we say enough is enough," Ichung'wah said.

Sentiments by Ichung'wah annoyed opposition lawmakers, who stood on their feet and started shouting at the majority leader.

In retaliation, Kenya Kwanza MPs started shouting, "No more bloodshed… No more handshake!"

The sergeants at arms were forced to take strategic positions to avoid fights between the opposing sides.

National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi accused Ichung'wah of profiling the Luo community on the floor of the house.

"Is it in order for the Member on the floor to be allowed to go on an on to profile members of the Luo community and to be aided by the leader of majority. Is this House going to turn itself into an arena for profiling the Luo community? So that we know and we deal with it," said Wandayi.

Raila announces requiem mass for protest victims

In other news, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga announced an interdenominational requiem mass in honour of those killed in the anti-government protests.

Raila said the requiem mass will occur on Friday, July 28, at De Paul Grounds in Karen.

The ODM leader said the mass will be used to pray for justice, healing and a conducive future for the country.

"We wish to invite all Kenyans to an Interdenominational Requiem Mass honouring the slain and injured victims of police brutality tomorrow, July 28 at De Paul Grounds in Karen, beginning 9am.

Together, we pray for justice, healing, and a safer, conducive future for our nation. Let us stand as one to remember and honour the fallen souls," Azimio said in the statement.

According to the statement by the Raila-Odinga-led team, most of its slain supporters were killed while fleeing violent scenes, while even more others after surrendering to the police.

“They were shot at vital organs and delicate parts of the body like the abdomen, the spine, the chest and the head. All of them were been unarmed,” Azimio claimed.
