Regional boss John Otieno said preliminary investigations showed the attack was due to an inter-clan conflict and that the attackers were on a revenge mission.

“The victims were asked to identify themselves before they were shot at close range. All the deceased are from the same clan,” said Otieno.

Otieno revealed that one key suspect was arrested and is aiding the police with investigations.

The suspects are pundits and we believe they were after revenge over an earlier incident. Through our intelligence, we have been able to arrest one key suspect who will help in nailing down the remaining suspects," he added.

The spate of killings in Garissa in recent days is worrying, and Wednesday's killings bring to 10- the number of murders in Garissa town in a span of a month.

4 people killed in Kiambu

Elsewhere, police in Kiambu county launched investigations after an unknown assailant attacked and killed four people in Gachugi village in Ngorongo, Gatundu North Constituency.

Kiambu police commander Perminus Kioi called on residents to maintain calm as they investigated the Monday, August 14 incident.

"We urge residents to remain patient and provide any information to help with investigations," Kioi said.

Assurance by the police comes after residents pleaded with the government to increase security in the area, Citizen Digital reported.

James Mwangi, a resident in the area, said the four men who died in separate attacks had similar injuries that appeared to have been caused by a blunt object.

"Their heads had been smashed with what we suspect is a metal rod or an axe. At first, we thought it was a hit-and-run accident when we saw the first victim but later discovered three others along the road. The entire village is in shock," Mwangi said.
