On Friday, August 25, several parts of the country were plunged into darkness after a nationwide blackout hit Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

In a statement, the monopoly electricity distributor noted it experienced a system disturbance at 9:45pm leading to the loss of bulk power supply to various parts.

On Saturday, August 26, morning, KPLC confirmed it had restored electricity to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi and the Mt Kenya regions. However, other parts were still affected by the power loss.

"Our teams are working to restore electricity to all areas across the country that were affected by the outage. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience," KPLC stated.

How Kenyans reacted to blackout

A quick check by TUKO.co.ke confirmed that parts of Western Kenya, Nairobi, Coast and Mt Kenya regions were in darkness.

Most who reported said the lights went out minutes to 10pm.

Just like any Friday, Kenyans are known to gather at various entertainment joints, and the latest development was a blow to their plans.

They expressed their frustrations at the electricity provider through various social media platforms.

Why Kenya experienced blackout in May

In May, another blackout rocked most parts of the country.

In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, the power utility firm attributed the outage to a system disturbance.

"We have lost bulk power supply to various parts of the country due to a system disturbance," the statement read in part.

Reports indicated that the outage was caused by a fault on the Suswa-Loyangalani high-voltage power transmission line, Kenya Power said.

Kenyans took to social media to vent their frustrations following the nationwide power outage. Kenyans would, however, not keep calm, choosing to explode on the company, accusing it of incessant flaws that lead to such events as national blackout.
