Kenyan Investigative Journalist Jailed Over Wife's Death Narrates How She Died: "We Fought Over Music Volume"

A former Kenyan journalist serving a 10-year jail sentence over the killing of his wife has given a chilling narration of how their domestic altercation became fatal on the fateful day she died.

Moses Dola was in 2018 sentenced to 10 years in prison for the killing after the judge found he was a stronger party in the fight that led to her death.

Speaking on Inooro TV's Njera-Ini Citu (Our Prisons), Dola narrated how he and his wife fell in love while working as journalists in a leading Kenyan media house.

He was a renowned investigative journalist who did major stories during his stint at the NMG, Radio Africa and Citizen TV.

"Ours was a love brewed in the newsroom. She was a reporter; her name was Sarah Wambui. She died in 2011, and a lengthy case came in tow for seven years," he said.

How did Moses Dola's wife die?

In his chilling account, the journalist said on May 1, 2011, he woke up early to listen to some music, and when he went back to the bedroom, he found his lover infuriated and complaining the music was too loud.

"In her anger, she went to disconnect my music from the radio, and she came back. By this time, I was also angry, and I went back to reconnect the music but lowered the volume," he recalled.

The convict said a heated argument would then ensue, and he claimed that his wife charged at him with a pair of scissors in her hand.

"She saw me pick up our son, and she came at me with the scissors in hand. I tried to evade her, and it is at that moment that we all fell. Unfortunately, she hit her head against the bed, and her injuries were fatal," he said.

Dola said he hopes to continue his journalism career after serving his sentence.

In May 2023, Dola, an anti-gender-based violence campaigner, shared a heart-rendering video as he marked over a decade without seeing his lover and the mother of their child.

The emotional video had an album of throwback photos of Dola, his wife and their handsome bundle of joy, Nate.

"In loving memory of Sarah Wambui Kabiru. This is all I have left in loving memory of you, Sarah. Many years have passed, 12 long years marked by your absence and sadness. I still remember the day you left. My world sank, Sarah. Police sirens remind me of prison," he said.
