Despite being a loyal subscriber, a Safaricom customer has expressed frustrations over her failure to access Fuliza loans.

Mercy Simiyu revealed she has been using Safaricom's SIM card since 2018 but cannot borrow from Fuliza, an overdraft service launched in 2019.

The frustrated customer said she has frequently transacted on M-Pesa and wondered why she could not activate Fuliza.

"I have been using my SIM card since 2018 till date. Why don't you guys give me Fuliza? I use Mpesa services every time...why why why? I need Fuliza," she posed on Facebook on Wednesday, August 30.

What Safaricom said about eligible Fuliza borrowers

When TUKO.co.ke sought a comment, Safaricom explained that Fuliza is disbursed by Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and NCBA at their discretion.

It noted that it does not set the limits as the two lenders approve them based on the borrower's history and credit score.

Safaricom said customers should continue using its services and keeping their lines active by topping up airtime.

"For your limit to increase, continue using Safaricom and M-Pesa services frequently and save constantly without withdrawing, keeping your Safaricom line active and topped up, once successful your new limit will be communicated to you, the limits are approved at the bank's discretion, we are not able to intervene and reset the limit," the telco clarified to TUKO.co.ke.

How much did businesses borrow from Fuliza?

Safaricom launched Fuliza ya Biashara in May 2023, allowing business owners to complete their transactions with insufficient funds.

KCB Bank Kenya reported that businesses borrowed over KSh 6 billion on their M-Pesa Till numbers in two months, ending June 30, 2023.

Fuliza products, personal and business, grew the value of mobile loans issued by the lender to KSh 154.3 billion.

"Our widely accessible mobile financing solutions augment our efforts to support households and small businesses to bounce back stronger," KCB noted.
