Kirinyaga - Police in Kirinyaga county have launched investigations after a patient fell from the fifth floor of Kerugoya Referral Hospital.

Kirinyaga Central sub-county police commander John Torori said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were probing the incident to establish the circumstance under which John Muchomba fell from the balcony.

“The matter is being investigated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations,” Torori said as reported by Citizen Digital.

Murimi said they were shocked when the hospital told them on Sunday, August 12, that their 34-year-old kin was in the mortuary after falling from the fifth floor.

“We were shocked after the hospital management told us John’s body was in the mortuary after falling from the fifth floor and police visited the scene,” Murimi said.
“This is sad. We were taking him there knowing they will take care of our patient,” Stephen Gacheru, the deceased's other brother said.

According to a postmortem report, the patient died by suicide after jumping from the hospital's balcony.

However, the family is unconvinced that their relative took his own life as they questioned why the hospital did not disclose the information early enough.

“We want an answer if this was really suicide. Why were we not told that on night we found him in the mortuary?” Muriuki posed.

Meanwhile, the Kirinyaga County Department of Health launched an investigation into a case where a child lost three fingers following complications during surgery after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

The incident happened at the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, where the child, Yassin Noor, was admitted on March 3, 2023.

Citizen Digital reported that the child's fingers were disarticulated weeks after his initial diagnosis, raising questions about the medical procedures and standards followed during treatment.

The CEC for Medical Services, Public Health and Sanitation, George Karoki, issued a statement confirming that investigations into the incident were ongoing to determine whether there was any negligence in the care provided.
