It was reported that the accident occurred near the Obamas' Katama estate in Martha's Vineyard Island.

Tafari Campbell's age

Divers recovered the 45-year-old from Dumfries in Virginia from a pond situated at Edgartown Great Road early Monday.

Taking to her Facebook timeline on Thursday, August 3, Michelle described the deceased as her friend, admitting that the emptiness his demise had caused could not be filled.

She encouraged herself to be strong and vowed to continue living and honouring Tafari's legacy in the best way possible.

"I will miss my friend, Tafari...the emptiness is hard. But I promise to stay strong, keep living, and honor your legacy in every way possible. Rest in peace, my brother," Michelle posted, igniting reactions of sympathy from her Facebook followers.

His body was retrieved about 100 feet from the shore and was eight feet deep.

Tafari's cause of death

According to the BBC, the Obama family was not home when the accident occurred, and it was reported that he was with another male paddleboarder at the pond before he went missing.

The Daily Mail reported on Thursday, August 3, that Massachusetts State Police had concluded investigation into Tafari's death and ruled out foul play, labelling the incident as an accident.

However, the police have not officially announced ruling out foul play as the suspected cause of Tafari's death.
