Kisii - A Kisii University student has revealed a scam where some people have been soliciting money in a WhatsApp group, pretending to help her pay her medical bills.
Eza, who studies at Kisii University, expressed her confusion after learning that a WhatsApp group had been formed to contribute funds towards her cancer treatment, yet she does not have the disease.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the student said she learned about the funds being collected using her identity through a friend who contacted her to inquire about her health after joining the group.

"Through the friend, I learnt that the group was created by a man whom I do not know. He is using my images to raise funds, and I do not even have cancer. The friend who informed me about the group was later ejected," she said.
The lady said she contacted the man associated with collecting the funds, and he became insolent after she questioned why he was using her photos to solicit funds from unsuspecting Kenyans.
"He had also made a post on Facebook and used my photos to inform his followers about the fake cancer treatment, but he has since brought it down. But the WhatsApp group is still there. My photos are being used but I am not ill or in need of medical funds," she said.
"The guy claims my name is Tracy and when I confronted him, he was very abusive. I have already informed the authorities about the scam," she said.
In other news, a Kenyan woman identified as Wangari M, an M-Pesa agent based in Nairobi, warned Kenyans to be alert, especially fellow agents, to new tricks employed by scammers.
"To M-Pesa agents, Safaricom will never call your personal number for anything. Treat that customer asking for new products daily as a suspect. To other Kenyans and customers, do not share your phone with anyone," urged Wangari.
She also shared her story of almost becoming a victim of the scam.
