Mombasa - Governor Abdullswamad Sherriff has received a major blow after Members of the Mombasa County Assembly rejected one of his nominees for chief officer position.

The MCAs rejected the nomination of John Kiprop as the Chief Officer for Renewable Energy and Natural Resources.

While rejecting Kiprop, the MCAs pointed out that the nominee was not from the coastal region and that he did not possess the ability to communicate in the Kiswahili language, Nation reported.

John Kiprop born in Baringo

During the debate, Port Reitz MCA Fadhili Makarani said Kiprop was unfit for the job as he has never lived in the coastal county.

"He was born in Baringo in 1974, and he has never lived, worked or schooled in Mombasa. during his vetting he did not show his love for Mombasa. it would have made a difference if he was a resident. That is why am rejecting him," Makarani said.

On his part, Chaani MCA Franklin Makanga argued that Kiprop, born in Baringo county, doesn't know parts of the coastal county; hence it will be difficult for him to discharge his duties if appointed.

"He does not deserve to be in our Cabinet. Worst still, he cannot speak fluently in Kiswahili, he does not know where Changamwe, Chaani or Bangladesh are. What change will he bring? he does not deserve the post," Makanga said.

Other MCAs wondered why Kiprop was looking to work in the county government when he was worth KSh 41 million, as he had declared during the vetting.

Uproar over Gachagua's remarks

In a related story, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua found himself on the receiving end after claiming the government operates like a company listed in the stock exchange market.

Speaking in Kericho on Sunday, February 19, Gachagua likened state appointments to shareholding in a company.

According to the deputy president, those who voted for Kenya Kwanza Alliance deserve a more significant share of the government than those who voted for the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.

Gachagua laughed at those who voted for Raila Odinga but had started trooping to the state house, seeking government appointments.

“This government is a company that has shares. Some owners have the majority of shares, there are those with just a few, while others do not have any. You invested in this government. You tilled, sowed, put manure, now it is time to reap,” said Gachagua.
