Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the 28-year-old said he failed two papers, biochemistry and parasitology, each by just two marks and needed to retake them, but his sponsors walked out on him.

"I didn't want to involve myself with bad company in the estate. I decided I would instead collect scrap metals and sell them. My dad is old and can't hustle on his own," he said, adding his mum left him when he was in Class 8.

Cheap houses in Katwekera Kibera

His father, Joshua Mungai, was in a terrible state after being left by his wife, who also went with some of their children and married elsewhere.

"I'm one person who keeps things to myself no matter how bad the situation is. Stress kept on piling up until I developed ulcers and got sick. My stomach had to be operated on," Mungai said, showing his scar.

Mungai said their dilapidated house in Katwekera Kibera, Nairobi county was almost falling off.

"When it rains, we must sleep while standing or in some corner of the house because the roof leaks. We have to dig a trench in the house for the water to flow outside," he said.

Gloria Amisi, a 13-year-old girl who was to be studying at Our Lady of Nazareth Primary and Junior Secondary School, resorted to work at the dump site.

The teenager worked at the dumpsite at Mukuru Kwa Njenga to supplement her mother's income, who could not pay her school fees, as reported by NTV Kenya.

Her mum, Rebecca Andeso, had two other children, including one who was in Form One that needed money for school fees.
