Nairobi - A primary school teacher at the periphery of the city is facing the law after allegedly causing the death of one of his pupils.

Lawrence Muthini, a teacher at Wangu Primary School, is said to have hit Emmanuel Muiruri on the head in May.

The 11-year-old had gone home with a colleague's school bag after mistaking it for his own, presumably having been looking alike.

He returned with it to the school the following day, but his teacher heard none of his explanations and hit him on the head before he fell unconscious.

Nation reported that one of Muthini's colleagues called young Emmanuel's parents to inform them that their son was very sick.

This kickstarted Emmanuel's in and out-of-hospital movements as his parents strived to nurse him back to health.

Emmanuel taken to local clinic

His parents arrived at school to find him unconscious and took him to the local dispensary before he was referred to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

After two days of treatment and observation, he was discharged with referrals to Kenyatta National Hospital and Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.

However, his health deteriorated despite his parents taking him to the hospital until he died on Monday, July 3, at Mama Lucy Hospital after developing complications.

The post-mortem examination on the minor showed he died of remote traumatic brain injury; hence the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recommended the teacher be charged with manslaughter investigations are completed.

Muthini denies charges in court

The teacher appeared before Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia on Thursday, July 27, denying the charges against him.

Muthini was set free on KSh 100,000 bond with an alternative cash bail of the same amount as the case comes up for mention on Thursday, September 28.

The witnesses lined up when the trial starts in January 2024 include a teacher at the school and three classmates of Emmanuel who witnessed the assault.

Health practitioners who attended to the minor after the injury and the pathologist who conducted the post-mortem examination are also witnesses.
