Nairobi - The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended a senior Nairobi Water and Sewerage official for allegedly demanding a bribe of KSh 50,000 to absolve a water bill.

The official in question, identified as Jimna Kubia Maina, a Supervisor at NAWASCO, found himself in the clutches of the law after attempting to manipulate a water supply reconnection by coercing an exorbitant sum from a concerned complainant.

Residential apartments in Kahawa West

The incident revolved around a residential building housing 17 units in Kahawa West, Nairobi county, which had been disconnected.

Reports indicate Maina had allegedly orchestrated the water supply disconnection under the pretext of an inflated and falsified water bill amounting to KSh 100,000.

The fabricated charges were attributed to a malfunctioning water meter, painting a portrait of financial exploitation and abuse of power.

The dubious act turned sinister on Monday when the aggrieved party was summoned to Maina's office in Pangani.

Here, the senior NAWASCO official intensified his campaign of intimidation, further demanding a hefty bribe of KSh 50,000 to alleviate the phantom financial burden.

Coercion to provide a bribe

In a chilling ultimatum, Maina warned that failure to comply with the bribe demand would result in an escalated and absurdly inflated bill of KSh 240,000.

Alarmed with no recourse, the complainant turned to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission for intervention and assistance.

The commission swiftly mobilised, taking action on the reported bribery and extortion case.

Maina's calculated misdeeds were cut short on the day he planned to collect the bribe.

He was apprehended in Kariobangi South moments before securing the illicit funds.

The accused now faces the full weight of the law under the Bribery Act of 2016, with his actions exposing the lengths to which corruption can infiltrate critical sectors and institutions.

Bungoma chief arrested for demanding KSh 10k bribe

On June 30, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Officers arrested a chief who asked for a KSh 10,000 facilitation fee to preside over land succession for a bereaved family.

John Murutu, the assistant chief for Sitikho sub-location in Bungoma county, was accused of demanding the 'facilitation fee' as a condition to sign and process land succession documents for a bereaved family in the village.

"Following investigations into a complaint from a bereaved family in Bungoma County, the Commission yesterday arrested John Murutu, the Assistant Chief for Sitikho Sub-Location, Webuye West Sub-County in Bungoma County, who had ordered the dependants of the deceased to pay him a mandatory ‘facilitation fee’ of KSh 10,000 before he could consider signing and processing their land succession documents," EACC said in a statement.
