Nakuru - A young man feels out of depth in seeking cancer treatment.

Bernard Wainaina Nyawira said he was stranded and clueless as he was too financially drained.

Wainaina disclosed he had used most of his money on his cancer treatment and could not raise more money to continue.

Pain in testicles

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the 22-year-old said he woke up one day in 2020 feeling pain in his testicles.

"That was the first time I had such symptoms, and immediately, I headed to the clinic to seek professional advice. I was given some medicines that were supposed to relieve my pain. It never worked, and I was advised to go to the hospital for further checkups," he narrated.

Wainaina took the advice and went to the hospital, where he later had a scan to ascertain his health status.

Paying hospital bill with NHIF card

The results showed some fluid in his testicles, and he was urged to undergo an operation soon.

"I was to pay KSh 25,000 cash or use the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) card for a year to cover the cost. Since I did not have money, I opted for the latter option, though it was twice as expensive," he noted.

The operation was successful, and he was back to his feed for a while before he suffered another setback.

He was having abdominal pain and could not help his mother with work whom he has been helping since he cleared primary school.

Unable to clear secondary school

His family could not afford school fees after he cleared his primary education because of financial constraint and was forced to work with his mum to make ends meet.

"I could not pay my rent since I was not working and life became too hard. I went back to the hospital and found there was more fluids in my testicles. I had to undergo another operation the second time," he noted.

The Nakuru man was diagnosed with hernia, which is a condition that occurs when part of your insides bulges through an opening or weakness in the muscle or tissue that contains it, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Pain below abdomen

Since the NHIF could not cover for his medical expenses a second time, he resorted to taking loans.

"I needed a third operation which I paid with money I had borrowed from loan sharks, family members and friends. I have incurred so much interests from the loans, I cannot even pay my rent because I do not even have a job.
My situation is getting worse as well and may need another surgery since the fluid keeps on recurring," he said.

Wainaina said when he helped himself he felt pain in his abdomen and through his tubes.

He observed he could not work because of the agony which left him desperate and dependent on his mother.

Naiorbi mum diagnosed with cancer

In another story, Nairobi mum was unable to work and breastfeed after being diagnosed with cancer.

Stella Njeri Ngare was stranded at a neighbour's house after being diagnosed with cancer, making her unable to work or breastfeed her young one.

The single mother who used to sell watermelons and work at construction sites became overreliant on her neighbour.

The Nairobi woman sought over KSh 100,000 to start her treatment, hoping to get better and face life in renewed strength.
