Kilifi - Embattled Kilifi-based preacher Ezekiel Odero has claimed that the government deregistered his church to stop his upcoming 'Meza ya Bwana' conference.

Odero, who moved to court to protest the decision by the government to deregister his church, said his mega-conference, which was to take place for 14 days, now remains uncertain.

Odero, through lawyer Danstan Omari, said he learnt about the notice to show cause to the registrar’s office through the media just days before the expiry of the notice.

"The calculated scheme by the 1st respondent of cancelling the registration of the church on May 19, 2023, and published on August 18, 2023, yet the applicant only became aware of the notice to show cause on the May 25, 2023," he said as quoted by Citizen TV.

Further, the man of the cloth also accused the registrar of societies of failing to provide the church file so that he could file for returns.

Omari on Odero's filing returns delays

On Friday, August 18, Omari insisted that Odero's returns had been ready for filing since the beginning of April 2023, but the file has been unavailable at the registry.

He accused the registry staff of refusing to accept the annual returns without the file.

"Even at the request to open a skeleton file at the registry, there has been no response by the registrar," he stated.

Ezekiel's Kilifi-based centre is among five other churches whose registration was revoked in a move to crack down on non-compliant religious institutions.

Other churches deregistered include Helicopter of Christ Church, Theophilus Church, Kings Outreach Church and controversial Pastor Paul Mackenzie's Goodnews International Ministries.
