Nairobi - National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has compelled Sports, Arts, and Youths Cabinet Secretary Sports Ababu Namwamba to apologise to the MPs.

Namwamba's trouble began after he wrote a letter to the National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah complaining about unfair criticism over the management of his ministry.

However, Wetang'ula called him out, terming the letter as cheeky and warned CSs against writing letters questioning their appearance and summons before the House.

Attempts by Namwamba to apologise through an explanation were immediately stopped by the Speaker, who cautioned the CS against attaching conditions to the apology and emphasised the need for a direct and concise answer.

"Don't give a conditional apology. Just cut the long story short. An apology should be unequivocal and clear. Rescind the content of the letter. Apologise so that we can do business in the House," Wetang'ula ordered.

The embattled Sports CS had no option but to apologise to the House unconditionally.

"Mr Speaker with a lot of respect let me withdraw that correspondence and unreservedly tender an apology to the house," Namwamba apologised.

Namwamba defends his work record

The Sports CS dismissed calls for his resignation by a section of Members of Parliament (MPs).

While answering questions in the National Assembly on Wednesday, August 23, Namwamba said there were no solid grounds to warrant his resignation.

The embattled CS said he was discharging his duties well since President William Ruto's appointment.

"I believe there is absolutely no sufficient ground that would cause my resignation because I am performing exemplary well as Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Arts, and Youths," Namwamba said.

Namwamba informed the lawmakers that he had achieved a lot in his docket, such as facilitating the lifting of the ban against the Football Kenya Federation.
