Nairobi - Kisii senator Richard Onyonka has criticised President William Ruto's statement regarding the sugar cartels in Western Kenya.

How William Ruto should tackle sugar cartels

During an interview on Citizen TV, Onyonka condemned the president for threatening people believed to be sugar cartels.

According to Onyonka, the president's statement could easily incite Kenyans against legitimate business people.

"Is the president trying to radicalise people and consumers of his information? You know his actions and his utterances mean something. When a president stands up and talks about an individual, whether he has broken the law or not, it puts them in a situation of unfairness," Onyonka said.

Senator Onyonka argued that Ruto should be wary of how he addresses delicate matters and allow the legal process to take its course instead of crucifying people in public.

"We must protect the due process very vigilantly and allow someone to go through the process if they have broken the law. Let the president not be the person who makes announcements in public where he is accusing somebody because he is trying this individual in public in advance," he added.

Onyonka said he was shocked following the abduction of Kabras Sugar billionaire Jaswant Singh Rai, a well-known wealthy businessman.

"These events are quite amazing because, for the first time in Kenya, I saw an individual who is quite wealthy and known in the business circles first abducted and then released," he stated.

Why Singh Rai should be worried

His sentiments come after Ruto fired a serious warning to Sugar cartels and maintained he will fight them tooth and nail as he seeks to restore Mumias Sugar company.

While reiterating his commitment to revive the sugar company in the Western Kenya region, the president said he would not entertain any sugar cartels standing in the way of his plans.

Speaking in Bungoma county during his tour of the Mulembe nation, the head of state said he is ready to jail the dubious dealers in the sector, further asking them even to leave the country.

"We have already told all these people to leave! This company belongs to the people, and we plan to revive it as we entertain nobody. I have already given them three options; they either leave the country, I jail them, or they travel and go to heaven," a tough-talking president said.

Before this public warning to cartels, he had linked billionaire businessman Singh Rai to powerful cartels standing in the way of his plans to revive the local sugar industry.
