A Siaya student who got an A- in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) has detailed how he was forced to work in mjengo after failing to raise KSh 27,000 for university admission.

Alphonse Okoth's dreams have been hanging by a thread since his guardian died a few months ago, leaving him anxious and uncertain since he cannot fund his education.

In an interview with NTV, Okoth said after getting an impressive A-minus grade in the national exams, he wanted to pursue a course in medicine, but he got an offer to study Engineering at Kenyatta University.

"I had a guardian who was paying my school fees. But he was ailing, and so I had to defer," he said.

Okoth now hopes to continue with his studies with the help of well-wishers.

"I was planning to work till September, hoping that I could get anyone willing to support me so that I can even join the TVET institution that would be better. The school fees was supposed to be KSh 42,000 and because I had deferred, that is what I am supposed to pay," he said.

Kenyans help needy Pangani Girls High School student

In other news, a section of Kenyans joined hands to salvage a Pangani Girls High School student who risked dropping out due to accruing fees arrears.

The student, a native of Kisii County, secured a place at the national school after scoring 404 marks in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

Owing to her home's sorry state of affairs, the girl joined the school a fortnight after her peers.

The first term would end with over KSh 41,000 recorded beside her name as fees arrears; she owed the school another KSh 25,165.

Kenyans managed to raise the cash required for her school fees.
