Teenagers Run Away From Restaurant After KSh 58k Bill, Police Post Video On Instagram: "Parents Apologised"

Four teenagers who dined and dashed at the Red Sea Restaurant in Dearborn, USA, voluntarily turned themselves in to the police after the authorities used social media to track them down.

How did the incident happen?

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 20, when a group of teenagers visited the restaurant on Michigan Avenue.

The owner of Red Sea Restaurant, Suhail Mohammed, told Fox 2 News the teenagers indulged in an extravagant meal that included lobster tails, snow crab, and shrimp.

"They got lobster tails, snow crab, shrimp, there were four. They had a good amount of food," said the Red Sea owner.

After finishing their meal, they abruptly left the restaurant without paying the bill, which amounted to approximately $400.00 (KSh 58,000).

The restaurant's staff, including a server named Liv, attempted to chase down the fleeing teenagers but were unsuccessful, as they quickly escaped in their car.

Restaurant calls police to investigate

"They ran out so all of us we ran towards them but they were already in the car. I couldn’t get to them," said Liv, a server.

The Dearborn police were immediately notified of the incident and arrived to initiate an investigation.

However, Liv, the server who had attended to the teenagers, proposed a unique approach to help locate the teenagers and their parents.

The restaurant provided the surveillance footage capturing the dine-and-dash incident to the police to post on the official Instagram account.

This innovative move paid off, as it led to swift results.

Liv expressed her conviction that sharing the video on social media played a pivotal role in tracking the teenagers and their families.

"Honestly, if we had not done that, we would have never found them," she stated.

Parents accompany teenagers to apologise

Surprisingly, within just 30 minutes of the video being posted on Instagram, the parents of the teenagers reached out to the restaurant.

They visited the establishment, extending their apologies and settling the unpaid bill. Additionally, the parents accompanied the teenagers and facilitated a face-to-face apology.

Despite the substantial bill, Suhail, the compassionate owner of Red Sea Restaurant, offered a 50% discount as a goodwill gesture.

He explained,

"They're kids at the end and I looked at it like they're my kids doing that stuff. Me giving them that 50% off on the bill was just because they came back and stood up for the mistake that they did."

Looking ahead, Mohammed expressed his hopes that social media will continue to be a tool for attracting paying customers rather than aiding dine-and-dash incidents.

Audi driver drives off without paying fuel bill

Back at home, a Kenyan Audi driver who fled from a filling station in Kiambu without paying the KSh 8,000 fuel he got was at it again.

This time around, he reportedly drove to a Shell petrol station in Kerarapon, Karen and drove off without paying for the KSh 7,000 fuel he filled.

In the first incident reported at the Kikuyu Police Station, the driver of the posh car, registration number KCS 835S, is said to have driven to Ola petrol station Gitaru along Nairobi-Nakuru Highway for fuel.

According to the information shared by the road safety agency Sikika, the driver sped off without paying for the commodity, leaving the petrol station attendant in trouble with his employer.
