Hinton authored the children's books Big David, Little David and The Puppy Sister in 1995. She has also written the adult fiction works Hawkes Harbor in 2004 and Some of Tim's Stories in 2007. Her autobiography Great Women Writers was co-authored by Rita Dove and Maya Angelou in 1999.
