Wu earned a degree in engineering from Northwestern Polytechnic University in 1984. She served as a journalist and editor at the China Shirong News Agency from 1988 to 1993. Yajun's real success and the status she currently holds came from her involvement in real estate. In 1994, she founded the now publicly traded real estate developer Longfor Properties. She founded the company with her second husband Cai Kui, whom she divorced in 2012.

Her company has been growing rapidly over the years, expanding from her initial base in Chongqing to major cities like Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Changzhou and Dalian. The couple had controlled 72% of the company's shares until their separation, when Mr. Cai received 40% of the shares. Wu is currently divorced and doesn't have any children.
