He is known for being one of the most innovative and proficient banjo players in the world and is known for his work with the bands Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and New Grass Revival. At 15 years old his grandfather gave him his first banjo and he studied at New York City's High School of Music and Art. He played with the group Tasty Licks and released his debut solo album Crossing the Tracks in 1979.

He helped form the band Spectrum in 1981 before joining New Grass Revival. In 1987 he recorded the solo album Drive which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. He has won a total of 13 Grammy Awards for Best Country Instrumental Performance, Best Pop Instrumental Performance, Best Instrumental composition, Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Best Instrumental Arrangement, Best Classical Crossover Album, and more.
