Martinet was born on September 17, 1955 in San Jose, California. He is of French decent and speaks French fluently. In 1990, he started working for Nintendo as the voice of Mario at trade shows. He was selected for going against the stereotypical Italian American voiceover and instead, chose a more soft-hearted and friendly voice that would be more palatable for children.

By 1995, he was doing the voices of Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Toadsworth, Metal Mario, Shadow Mario, Donkey Kong, MC Ballyhoo, Mini-Mario Toy, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi and Baby Wario in most games. He also contributed the voices to the enemies Wart, Mouser, Trclyde, and Clawgrip in Super Mario Advance. His voice work appears in the English and Japanese-language versions of the game, although his work is always in English. Other than his work for Nintendo, Martinet has also worked as a voice actor in commercials, cartoons, and promotions. He has done additional work for other video games such as Cel Damage and as the primary voice in several educational games for the LeapFrog toys.
