Verne Gagne was born in Robbinsdale, Minnesota in February 1926. He owned and promoted the American Wrestling Association. Gagne held the World Heavyweight Championship 16 times including the AWA World Heavyweight Championship 10 times and the World Heavyweight Championship five times. Gagne still holds the record for having the longest combined reign as a world champion. He is third for having the longest single world title reign.

Gagne has been inducted into the WWE, WCW, and Professional Wrestling Halls of Fame. He won two NCAA titles at the University of Minnesota and was an alternate for the U.S. freestyle wrestling team at the Olympic Games in 1948. He trained wresters including his son Greg Gagne, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Curt Hennig, Bob Backlund, and The Iron Sheik. Gagne was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 1947 NFL Draft but he did not play in the NFL. In 2009 Gagne killed a man but was not criminally charged because of his dementia. Verne Gagne passed away on April 27, 2015 at 89 years old.
