Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has taken a swipe at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amid fallout claims in Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

In a statement on Monday, May 20, Waiguru said public officers like those holding the position of deputy president should not personalise their offices.

What is Anne Waiguru's message to Gachagua?

In an indirect attack on Gachagua and his allies, Waiguru said it's wrong to make it appear taboo for anyone else to aspire to be the deputy president.

"While we respect the office of the Deputy President, and indeed any other office of leadership, a progressive democracy does not allow us as occupiers of public leadership offices to personalise them to the extent that it becomes taboo for anyone else to nurture and express ambition to occupy them. We hold these offices in trust, not as owners," Waiguru said.

The second-term governor, who analysts say might be eying the DP position in 2027, said every Kenyan, including women and youths, has a right to pursue their dream of holding any office in the country.

She said women and youths deserve nurturing to actualise their dream of holding high offices, not hostility from current office holders.

"Let us recognise the right of all, especially our women and our youth, to aspire to high office. Let us hold hands in mentorship for political and socioeconomic leadership. Everyone has a right to dream & pursue their dreams like those in current leadership dreamt, and their dreams are actualised with the support of millions of youth and women. They, too, deserve support, not hostility. Hopefully, we all seek the best for Kenya," she added.

Is their division in Kenya Kwanza?

Her sentiments come a few days after Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga cautioned against any plans to undermine Gachuaga in the Kenya Kwanza government.

Speaking in Nyeri on Sunday, May 19, Kahiga hinted at a possible fallout between President William Ruto and Gachagua.

The tough-taking Kahiga said the people of the Mt. Kenya region will not allow Gachagua to be mistreated like Ruto was allegedly mistreated under former president Uhuru Kenyatta's administration.

He added that Gachagua was not appointed to his current position; instead, he was elected like any other leader and deserves respect.
