Leaders of the Azimio coalition have strongly criticised the Kenya Kwanza government's decision not to declare floods a national disaster, despite heavy rains across the country.

Speaking during a press statement on Red Cross Day on Wednesday, May 8, Wiper arty leader Kalonzo Musyoka emphasised that such a declaration by President William Ruto would necessitate spending from the country's contingency fund.

"With all the widespread disruptions witnessed, the Kenya Kwanza regime is reluctant to declare the floods a national disaster so that it can get the adequate response needed. We are aware that such a declaration will automatically call for the expenditure from the country's contingency fund. Could it be that there is no money in the contingency fund? If no money, who spent it?" he asked.

Why Azimio wants donations for flood victims increased

The coalition further condemned the government's inadequate response to the devastating floods.

Kalonzo dismissed Ruto's announcement of a KSh 10,000 donation to over 40,000 households affected by the floods, from the KSh 1 billion allocated for their support.

The opposition deemed this donation insufficient for flood victims who have lost everything.

"Such allocations are too little to start afresh. We demand the government increase financial support to at least KSh 100,000 per family and immediately launch an emergency aid appeal for all the flood victims in Kenya.
We demand that the government immediately deploy all the necessary responses for mitigating the impact of the flooding on affected communities including the provision of assistance to the bereaved families and the internally displaced," they added.

According to Red Cross estimates, addressing the flood situation could require a minimum of KSh 7 billion.
