A woman from Eldama Ravine is crying for justice after her son succumbed to injuries following a beating allegedly by a group of Kenya Forest Service rangers.

Nineteen-year-old Stephen Mwangi had visited the Maji Mazuri Forest Station to negotiate his mother's release when he encountered the supposed rogue rangers.

They demanded a KSh 2,500 bribe to release her.

She, however, did not have the needed cash, giving the KSh 1,500 she had.

The officers would insist on the full amount, prompting the woman to call her son to bring her the remainder.

"I called my son and sent him to another woman to collect the money. He came and while at the station, I felt like relieving my self but the officers would not excuse me, insisting that I relieve myself in front of my son," she recalled.

The aggrieved mother further revealed that the officers indecently handled her, irking her son, who resorted to facing off with the officers.

The officers reportedly turned on him and started beating him with blunt objects on the head.

Mwangi sustained serious injuries on the head and was taken to a health centre in Eldama Ravine before his referral to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Baringo Forest Conservator Ann Nyaoke confirmed that the quintet was apprehended by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives probing the case.

The arrest came hours after irate members of the public took on the police in running battles on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, after their motive to torch the KFS offices as retaliation was repulsed.

They barricaded the Majimazuri-Makutano Road to protest the assault that ended the young man's life.
