Elders from Gitei village, Gathanje, Kiambu county, convened at the late TikToker Brian Chira's residence to perform a cleansing ceremony, weeks after his burial.

Why did the elders perform the cleansing?

Chira tragically lost his life on March 16, 2024, in a hit-and-run accident in Karuri, Kiambu, and was laid to rest on his grandmother's ancestral home on March 26. In a video shared on Facebook by Debbymovy Official, the elders, adorned in traditional attire, assembled at Chira's home to conduct the cleansing ritual.

This ceremony comes in the wake of concerns raised by villagers regarding the behaviour exhibited by the thousands of mourners who gathered at Chira's home. The dismay felt by villagers over what they deemed as disrespectful conduct from TikTokers during the burial ceremony.

Villagers outraged by mourners' behaviour

Villagers expressed outrage over TikTokers' actions, including dancing, recording videos, and taking selfies around Chira's final resting place.

Particularly egregious to the community was the stepping on the graves of Chira's ancestors and performing rituals, such as watering the flowers with alcohol, at the grave site. The villagers, deeply rooted in Kikuyu culture, considered these actions as deeply disrespectful and called for a cleansing ceremony to remove any negative spirits left behind.

They emphasised the importance of dignity in burial rites and expressed their desire to prevent such behavior from occurring in their village again.

Video of Chira talking about funeral emerges

A video featuring Brian Chira, surfaced online, reigniting interest in his unique perspective on life and death.

The footage, recorded during an interview before his demise, resurfaced after being shared by user @newsroom.1, prompting a wave of admiration.

In the video, Chira was seen discussing his thoughts on what he envisions for his funeral arrangements.

• During his burial, the mourners were treated to some of the popular sounds that he left behind on TikTok.
• Member of Parliament Peter Salasya also attended the late TikToker's funeral and claimed Chira was among the people who inspired him.
• His cousin also fainted as his body was being lowered into the ground, leaving some trying to wake him up during the live service.
• Mary Musyoka shed tears while talking about her friend, Chira, saying she thought news about his death was a prank.
• Brian Chira's grandmother called to inform him about their landlord demanding rent arrears, but his phone was off.
