Nakuru - Families in Mai Mahiu are still reeling in shock following the deadly floods that left at least 60 people dead and scores missing.

John Mwangi Mwaura, a survivor, is still picking up the pieces after he lost eight family members in the disaster that left his wife hospitalised.

Mwaura said his two children and six grandchildren perished as Mother Nature unleashed her wrath on the locals.

Among Kenyans given temporary shelters by the government, Mwaura said his greatest wish would be to find land to rebuild his life by constructing a house.

"My wife is in the hospital, and my children have passed away. What would be really important to me is if I could find a place to build, I would be very happy," he said.

What was Mwaura family's appeal?

The family expressed gratitude to the national government for giving them accommodation after the tragedy.

Mary Njoru, a survivor, explained that their only prayer would be to see their deceased buried in their rural home.

"We are very grateful because they have provided us with a house, we say thank you very much. One more thing we can say is to help us a little more by taking the bodies of our children home so we can bury them there," Njoru cried out.

Man runs through flooded river

Earlier, a video capturing a man sprinting through a flooded river that had washed away a vehicle on Sunday, May 5, garnered attention and excitement among online users.

The rapid water flow did not hinder the man's progress, as he successfully traversed through and safely reached the opposite end.

His daring act came after a failed crossing attempt by a driver whose vehicle was overwhelmed by floodwaters and swept into the river.
