Isiolo - A 77-year-old man from Losira village in Oldonyiro is nursing serious injuries after a vicious attack by a hyena.

Akal Lekishe reportedly heard a commotion in his sheep pen and went out to save his animals, only to be turned into prey.

A report by Citizen Digital revealed that the scavenger was trying to escape from the pen when it found the door closed.

Lekishe had accidentally closed the door while getting in, forcing the beast to turn its frustrations on him.

David Lekishe, his son, revealed that the animal left his father with serious head and rib injuries.

"My dad woke up to try and save his goats...the hyena was trying to find its way out but turned on my father because the door had shut itself from the inside," David opened up.

The septuagenarian was rushed to Consolata Hospital Mathari in Nyeri for treatment following the brutal attack.

Why was Lekishe taken to Nyeri

The family's efforts to save Lekishe were immediately fruitless after they travelled at least 65km only to find the hospital in Nanyuki paralysed due to the ongoing doctors' strike.

It is then that they resorted to taking him to Nyeri where he's receiving proper medical care.

His son observed that animal attacks had increased in recent days, adding that they need to be compensated for their troubles.

"We want to see compensation because there are so many people that have been attacked by elephants, hyenas, as well as other animals, and we heard the President promise prompt compensation of victims of wild animal attacks," he stated.

4 Kirinyaga women severely attacked by hyena

Earlier in January, four residents of Kiamugumo village in Kirinyaga county were attacked by marauding hyenas.

David Muriithi disclosed that the four women, Marion Wawira, Sicily Murugi, Toronto Macharia, and Susana Wawira, were picking tea when the animal appeared and brutally attacked them.

They also urged the KWS to hasten and capture the animal roaming in tea bushes in the Gichugu sub-county.

Additionally, the animal had created intense fear, making it difficult to take their children to school.
