Nairobi - The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has recommended 20 individuals for appointment as judges of the High Court.

How many people applied for High Court judge position

In a statement on Friday, May 3, JSC chairperson Justice Martha Koome disclosed that the commission had advertised 20 vacancies for the Office of Judge of the High Court on October 13, 2023.

Koome said 305 applications were received from which 100 were shortlisted for the position of the High Court judge.

"The Commission conducted selection interviews from April 3, 2024, to May 3, 2024. A total of 95 were interviewed, 4 withdrew their applications, and 1 was appointed as the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary," Koome said.

After deliberation among the commissioners, 20 names were forwarded to President William Ruto for appointment.

Koome said JSC put into consideration the gender and regional balance before arriving at the final list.

“After lengthy deliberations and consideration of the constitutional imperatives of merit, gender, regional/ethnic balance, and affirmative action, the Commission has recommended the following individuals for appointment to the Office of Judge of the High Court of Kenya,” said Koome.

What Ruto and Koome agreed at State House, Nairobi

As reported earlier the president and the chief justice held a meeting at State House Nairobi, over claims of corruption in the Judiciary.

In a statement by State House spokesman Hussein Mohammed, the meeting agreed on six issues aimed at resolving the standoff.

Following the meeting, the Executive and Legislature agreed to support the Judiciary's request for an additional budget to aid in optimising the efficient delivery of services and the fight against corruption.

The two agreed on the recruitment of 36 more judges.
