Kabete National Polytechnic Ranked Best TTI In New Timely Kenya Survey
  • Kabete National Polytechnic was ranked the best technical training institute in the latest survey by the New Timely Kenya

According to the New Timely Kenya Survey, Kabete National Polytechnic in Kiambu is the best technical training institute in the country.

In the survey released on Monday, May 27, the Kiambu-based technical and vocational education training (TVET) topped all 2,567 nationwide.

TVETs form the significant number of tertiary institutions in the country at 96.36%, followed by Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) at 2.67% (71) and last public universities at 2.55% (68).

Sigalagala National Polytechnic came second, Meru National Polytechnic in third position , Eldoret National Polytechnic fourth, and Kenya Coast National Polytechnics closing the top five best TTI in the country.

In the top 10 technical institutes and vocational training centers, Karumo TTI topped the list, followed by Matili TTI, Bureti, Michuki, and Nairobi TTIs.

Other top-10 list institutions were Sikri Technical and Vocational College for the Blind and Deaf, Rift Valley TTI, Keroka TTI, Siaya Institute of Technology and Thika TTI.

Kabete tops in the Central region

In the ranking per region, Kabete National Polytechnic topped in the central area, followed by Nyeri National Polytechnic.

Kiambu Institute of Science andTechnology, Mukuruwein TTI and Michuki TTI cliched positions three, four, and five, respectively.

Top courses taken by students in TVETs

Engineering and business-related courses topped the survey as the courses most TVET students took.

Electrical and mechanical engineering topped the list, followed by business courses in hospitality and tourism, hairdressing, and beauty and fashion design.

Other courses in the top eight were Information Communication Technology (ICT), carpentry, welding, plumbing, and masonry, social work and community development.

2024 candidates choose diploma courses over degree

TVET and TTIs were the biggest winners of the 2024 the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), as most students who applied for placement preferred bachelor in education and diploma programs despite the availability of over one million slots.

In the placement, over 600,000 2023 KCSE candidates did not apply for placement at Kenyan universities.

KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome said joining universities is a choice, not a mandatory one, suggesting that most students could have joined the military or opted to study abroad.
