The introduction of these charging stations marks a significant step towards embracing green technology and reducing carbon emissions in the city.
"The two electric vehicle (EV) chargers, one at Stima Plaza and the other at Ruaraka will be open for free use by members of the public who own EVs, primarily to assist the company in its research and development," said Kenya Power in a statement on X.
To use the charging stations, EV owners will need to obtain an RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) card from the Kenya Power security desks located at Stima Plaza and Ruaraka.
The stations feature cutting-edge technology, including a 50 kW DC charger capable of providing a full charge in just one hour and a 22 kW AC charger with a charging time of two hours.
The station at Stima Plaza was inaugurated by Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror after being constructed at a cost of of KSh 6.5 million.
In related news, Kenya Power has announced a significant investment of up to KSh 258 million over the next three years to drive the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
This investment includes the establishment of EV charging stations at various locations nationwide and the procurement of electric vehicles and motorcycles to support the company's operations.
Kenya Power intends to expand its electric vehicle fleet by purchasing an additional nine electric vehicles, both heavy and light-duty, as well as 25 electric motorcycles by the end of December 2024.
