Kisumu: Radio Lake Victoria Ceases Operation After Floods Wash Away Their Equipment

The meteorological department has issued a severe rain warning, advising residents in lowland areas to relocate to higher ground.

Heavy rains have caused widespread devastation in several regions, resulting in floods, landslides, and tragic loss of life. Hundreds of people have perished, and many families have been displaced.

A prominent Luo radio station, Radio Lake Victoria 92.1 FM, has been severely affected by the relentless downpours which forced it to go off the air, as much of its equipment was washed away by backflows from Lake Victoria.

"We take this earliest opportunity to convey our sincere apologies to our esteemed listeners and loyal clients for not doing a live broadcast in the last 24 hours. This is due to the ongoing heavy rains in most parts of the country which has led to massive Lake Victoria backflow which ended up flooding our on-air studios, production studios, as well as our offices," read a statement by the radio station.

Will Radio Lake Victoria resume operation?

The station is situated on Dunga Beach in Kisumu, just meters from the lake's edge.

Photographs taken depict the studio standing empty, with only an electrical extension cord and curtains remaining.

However, the management promised their listeners to resume daily broadcasts and offered a sincere apology for the inconvenience caused.

"We are working day and night to resume our daily live Broadcasts as soon as possible. We take this earliest opportunity to apologise to all our esteemed clients for the inconvenience caused and promise to be back with a bang. Continue listening to 92.1 FM," added the statement.

Weatherman warns of intense rain this week

Meanwhile, the director of meteorological services, David Gikungu, urged Kenyans to be vigilant as most regions will receive heavy rains this week.

Gikungu stated that the rains would be accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms and would cause severe floods and landslides.

He mentioned over 20 counties to be affected, including Kajiado, Nairobi, Kisii, Bungoma, Kirinyaga, Narok, and Uasin Gishu, among others.
