The secretary general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU), Davji Atellah, has castigated Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria for insisting the government will not pay medical interns KSh 206,000.

Kuria argued that paying medical interns the aforementioned amount is unattainable and unrealistic.

Atellah was pissed off by the CS's remarks and called him out via his X account, terming his sentiments unacceptable.

" No matter how big you think you are, you are just a little spark, ignorance is not a virtue," Atellah said.

Moses Kuria on intern doctors' payment

Speaking during an interview with KTN, Kuria ruled out medical interns earning a higher salary.

He termed the KMPDU demand unrealistic and impractical. He said that he has a list of more than 50,000 people who want a job.

"I will not pay KSh 206,000, I will not pay. Take it from me. As long as I am the Minister for Public Service, nothing of that sort will happen," he said.

He further stated that paying medical interns the proposed salary would be unfair to other people in the job market who went to school, like engineers.

" You want me to pay that to people who have been on strike, who only work for two hours and go and work for private clinics?" he posed.

The Public Service CS added that the government has a budget for doctors, not students.

Governor threatens to employ Ugandan doctors

Elsewhere, Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya threatened to seek alternative doctors from neighboring countries if the Kenyan doctors refused to resume work.

Natembeya said he would easily find doctors in Uganda, adding that he would only need to advertise the openings and let them apply.
