Eldoret - A section of Moi University students have expressed frustrations after the institution shifted its graduation ceremony to December.

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, the students criticised the university's decision, saying it negatively impacted their lives.

The students who sought anonymity mentioned that they enrolled at the university in 2019, hoping to graduate early to begin their job search.

"We joined the university under the 2019 cohort and finished our classes in December 2023, after which we were told we would graduate in June 2024. But now we are being told the graduation has been pushed to December because of a lack of funds," they said.

Why Moi University changed graduation dates

They expressed their worry, arguing that the decision by the institution means they will get their completion certificates in 2025.

They lamented struggling to convince their parents; some believe they never completed their studies.

"This means we will get our certificates in early March 2025. So imagine you join a university for a four-year course but get your certificate after six years. It's concerning, that you called your parents, and they think you never cleared the fees. It's really frustrating. A whole year wasted (January - Dec 2023) because most of the students, especially from the school of education, have incomplete transcripts, so they cannot use them anywhere," another student said.

The frustrated students said it was inhumane for the institution to force the cohort that joined in 2019 to graduate with those that joined in 2020.

"It has been discussed in the council meeting and recorded in the University statutes that there will be one graduation this year for two groups, /20 and /21, in December. Changing that is not an easy process. Impossible !" the students quoted a senior university officer saying.

The students are now pleading with the Ministry of Education to intervene and force the institution to hold the graduation ceremony as planned.

What Moi University about missing marks

In other news, Moi University issued a statement addressing posts circulating on social media regarding allegations that students pay to have their marks adjusted upwards.

Through a press statement, the institution's Vice Chancellor, Isaac Kosgey, urged all students to exercise caution and utilise the formal channels available to obtain their grades, including seeking guidance from the Chair of the Department and Dean of the School.

This came in light of a social media post by an individual claiming to be a former institution student pursuing a Bachelor of Education.
