Nairobi - The national government has stepped up its efforts to restore sanity on Kenyan roads following a surge in road accidents.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has come under widespread criticism, with some Kenyans calling for his dismissal.

During the National Road and Safety Action Plan on Wednesday, April 17, Murkomen claimed carelessness was to blame for increased carnages.

Murkomen's warning to rowdy youth hanging on car

On Monday, April 22, the CS announced his pursuit of two individuals who were filmed dangerously dangling from a speeding Mercedes Benz on Mombasa Road.

Kipchumba posted a video showing the vehicle cruising down the busy highway with two individuals precariously hanging from the rear windows.

He addressed the car owner, James Gathogo Njeri, in a public post, expressing concern and vowing to take necessary action after being notified by a vigilant citizen.

"James Gathogo Njeri, this is how your white Mercedes-Benz KCX 959B class E-250 was being driven on Mombasa Road in one of those “where is the Minister” moments. We are concerned, and a responsible citizen has alerted us. We shall do what we must," Murkomen wrote.

Reckless Mombasa road motorists arrested

Hours after Murkomen's warning, the individuals, identified as Peter Igadwa Agawy and Peleg Mosongo Momari, were placed in police custody.

In a statement, journalist Seth Olale revealed that the duo had been detained at Capitol Hill Police Station awaiting arraignment.

"Two men captured while hanging dangerously in the video clip, namely Peter Igadwa Agawy, 23 and Peleg Mosongo Momari, 20, have been arrested and placed in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station, awaiting an appearance in court tomorrow," he wrote.

Murkomen accused of being biased

Following his post in X, several social media users confronted Murkomen with an older video of Senator Karen Nyamu herself flouting traffic regulations.

In the said video, the nominated lawmaker was captured driving on the wrong side of the road without remorse.

Users shared the video, criticising Murkomen’s silence on Nyamu’s infraction and government officials' daily violations.
