For the first time in years, fuel and unga prices have dropped from the list of major concerns for Kenyans. This is attributed to the recent drop in the costs of the two commodities.

According to a survey released by TIFA Research, Kenyans' worries have shifted to other issues currently affecting the country.

These include fake fertiliser, increasing road accidents, floods that have resulted in loss of lives, and the medical practitioners' strike.

The poll, conducted between April 27 and April 29, showed that 55% of respondents noted that the fertiliser subsidy programme was not operating optimally.

Fifty-six per cent of Kenyans said the doctor's strike had affected their family members, and 54% said they did not support it.

At the same time, 78% of respondents believed road accidents had risen.

In regards to flooding, residents in Nairobi (56%), Northern Kenya (53%), and Lower Eastern (53%) said they were affected by floods to a 'great deal'.

President William Ruto promoted Charles Kahariri to general and appointed him the chief of defence forces (CDF) on Thursday, May 2.

According to the publication, the Defence Council chaired by Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale recommended the next CDF be picked from the Kenya Airforce since Francis Ogolla had not completed his term.

However, the service had no lieutenant general officer. According to military rules, an officer must serve in every rank and cannot outjump a rank.

Kahariri was picked ahead of Lieutenant General Jimson Mutai since he was a senior Kenya Navy officer and joined the military in 1987, while the latter joined in 1992.

Ruto stuck to the Tonje rules, which guide succession in the military.

The Cabinet has approved the re-opening of schools on Monday, May 6, despite the raging floods, which have destroyed schools, roads and other infrastructure.

President William Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to work with the National Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to rehabilitate flood-damaged schools.

"We must continue striving to meet the ever-growing demand for higher education, focusing on elevating those at the bottom of the social and economic pyramid through access to quality education," Ruto said.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu postponed the opening of schools following intense downpours countrywide.
