Why were the matatus not operating?

On Tuesday, May 28, many commuters were left stranded after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) banned the Eastlands-based matatus under the Sacco from operating within Nairobi.

The directive followed a tragic incident on Saturday, May 11, along Jogoo Road, resulting in the fatalities of three individuals.

The accident transpired while the vehicle was en route from Kayole to Nairobi CBD.

The ban halted the Sacco's operations, leaving many commuters who relied on the matatus for their affordability and convenience stranded.

Regular matatu users voiced frustration over the surge in fare prices, which increased to between KSh 100 and KSh 150 during peak hours, in contrast to the usual fare of approximately KSh 70.

NTSA revokes licences of long-distance PSVs

Earlier on May 3, commuters faced tough times as the NTSA cancelled licences belonging to 64 matatu Saccos.

NTSA wrote to the Kenya National Police Service (NPS) to impound any PSV operating under the revoked Saccos.
