It is a sigh of relief for residents of Nairobi City Council estates, famously known as Kanjo estates, after Nairobi governor Nairobi Johnson Sakaja said they will be given priority upon the completion of affordable housing.

He stated that Kanjo residents are not obligated to pay for the affordable housing units. Instead, they will only need to continue paying service charges as usual.

Speaking to Radio Citizen on Monday, April 29, the governor stated that Kanjo estates residents will not have to worry about incurring charges for the houses being developed through the national government's Affordable Housing initiative.

"There are seven estates we have already awarded including Woodley, Bahati, Shauri Moyo, Jericho… all the people who have been living in our Kanjo houses, who have been paying since the 50s and 60s… all these people we will give them houses for free,” he said

The governor further disclosed that the Nairobi County government has initiated the allocation process for estates such as Jericho, Shauri Moyo, Bahati, and Woodley.

He emphasized that individuals residing in the Kanjo estates since the 1950s and 1960s would receive houses without any payment required.

Elsewhere, Governor Sakaja on Monday, April 29, Sakaja visited the Nairobi central business district (CBD), where he covered the transportation costs for stranded students.

This followed the government pushing the opening date for schools by one week following ongoing rains and floods that have claimed over 70 lives and destroyed property worth millions.
