The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has revealed it approved KSh 815.5 million in allowances and salaries for Kenyan public workers between October and December 2023.
In its second-quarter wage bill bulletin for the 2023/2024 financial year, SRC noted it received requests amounting to KSh 1.64 billion.

During the same period in the last financial year, SRC approved KSh 571.16 million.
The total value of SRC advice for the half year of FY 2023/2024 amounted to KSh 24.8 billion, against the total request of KSh 41.4 billion, representing 60% of the value of requests received and determined.
In contrast to the same period in FY 2022/2023, the value of both granted and filed requests increased almost fivefold.
The national government's planned spending on personal emoluments for the second quarter of FY 2023/2024 was KSh 127.79 billion, down from KSh 123.53 billion during the same time in FY 2022/2023.
In March, President William Ruto issued an order requiring the government to live within its means, directed explicitly at state corporations.
The president said certain agencies have been losing money for years and had become a burden on the exchequer.
Ruto directed profit-making entities to cut recurrent expenditures by 30% and avoid pointless purchases.
Commercial state firms were also asked to remit 80% of their profits to the National Treasury after taxes.
