Kenya has witnessed the emergence of several young talents in the last few years, many of whom have been tipped to turn around the fortunes of the country’s football.
Most of these talents came to light during secondary school games. In 2023, there were several stand-out performers, including Emily Morang’a.
The 19-year-old plays for the Kenya Women's Premier League (KWPL) side Vihiga Queens and has been billed as a star in the making.
Emily was key in the Nyakach Girls' quest for glory at the Kenya Secondary School Games.

She also participated in the Kisumu regional Safaricom Chapa Dimba football tournament and the Talanta Hela U19 football tournament, where she represented Kisumu county.
Her pace and skills on the pitch have made her a darling to many sports enthusiasts and earned her a call-up to the Vihiga-based KWPL side.
“Plateau Queens and Vihiga Queens attacker Emily Morang'a is destined for greatness,” said Woud Adori, a soccer enthusiast
Emily was also part of the Talanta Hela u19 team, which participated in the 15th edition of the Costa Daurada Cup in Salou, Spain, earlier this year.
“I didn't know that I could play up to this level. It is by God's grace and the commitment that have also motivated me from my high school coach, teachers and my fellow players,” the youngster said in an interview after returning from Spain.
She pointed out that their participation in the Costa Daurada Cup was an eye-opener.
The Ministry of Sports initiated the Talanta Hela tournament to nurture young talents.
“The Talanta Hela initiative has opened many doors time. It has enabled me to get to Vihiga Queens as well as get invaluable skills from professional coaches like coach Jackline Juma. Through the initiative, our future is bright,” the youngster said during an interview after returning from Spain.
Emily dreams of playing for top European ladies' football clubs like Chelsea.
She took the national football league by storm after scoring four goals for Vihiga Queens in the opening game.
Her coach, Boniface Nyamunyamu, agrees with those branding her a star in the making.
“She is a young, talented player. We depend on her as a team, bearing in mind that we lost many of our strikers. We will not pressure her, but we need her to work hard. She is still young, and if given enough time to play, she will go far,” the coach said.
