Police in Hurara Police Post in Tana Delta, Tana River county, are investigating a case after a suspect died in the police cell on Monday, May 27.

What happened to the deceased?

According to acting Police Constable Daniel Kamau of Hurara Police Post, Tarasaa Police Station, the deceased was locked up in the cell pending his arraignment the following day.

However, the lifeless body of the 41-year-old man was found on the floor early in the morning, TV 47 Digital reported.

The cell officers on duty were doing round checks at 5:30am when they discovered the deceased's cell was locked from the inside, prompting officers to check in, where they saw the lifeless body.

"Our cell officers Jesse Mucheru and Caleb Owako were on the morning routine check when they found the door locked from the inside at around 5:30 am, prompting them to look through a tiny door hole, where they saw the body of the deceased at the window grill," Kamau said.

According to Kamau, the deceased killed himself using a corded string from a clothing material during the night. The deceased suspect's body was taken to Hola County Referral Hospital mortuary.

"The suspect ended his life with a corded string he made from a clothing material by the window side of his cell. His body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy and identification by family," he further stated.

IPOA visits the police cell

Kamau said the matter was reported at the county investigation headquarters before the door cell was broken.

Later, the Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) Tana Delta, Sub-County Criminal Investigation Officers (SCCIO) Tana Delta, and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) visited, accessed, and documented the situation on the scene.

Machakos man dies in police custody.

According to the family members, the news of the death of their kin was made known to them after he was immediately rushed to Kangundo Level 5 Hospital.

The police in charge said the suspect had killed himself in the cell.
