"Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA) yesterday, ahead of the Country's upcoming General Elections on May 29, 2024. The former President was warmly welcomed at Oliver Tambo International Airport by High Commissioner Jane Ndurumo and officials from the African Union (AU)," Uhuru said.

The African Union Commission recently appointed Uhuru to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the general elections in the Republic of South Africa.

Uhuru indicated that his appointment highlights the continent's shared commitment to promoting transparency, credibility, and the integrity of electoral processes across its diverse nations.

Why are election observation teams crucial?

He pointed out that his team will play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral processes, including the tabulation of results.

"Election observation missions play an essential role in safeguarding the integrity of electoral processes by providing impartial assessments and recommendations. As the head of the AUEOM, Kenyatta will be leading a team of experts and observers who will be responsible for monitoring various aspects of the electoral process, including polling and the tabulation of results," his office added.

South Africa will hold elections to choose a new National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures in all nine provinces.

What is Uhuru's main role in South Africa?

According to the AUC, the deployment of the AUEOM team reiterates the African Union's commitment to supporting democracy and all democratic processes across the continent.

Uhuru and his team of at least 60 short-term observers will monitor the election process in South Africa and report on its merits and detractors.

Polling station procedures, campaigns, and vote counting will be key focus areas to ensure a transparent and credible election.
