Nairobi - President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has stated that the East African Community will ultimately become a federation.

Speaking at State House on Thursday, May 16, the Ugandan head of state said the EAC treaty states that the community would eventually form one government.

Revived on November, 30, 1999 and ratified in July 2000 by the original three partner states, Museveni is the only living president from the ceremony.

"We revived this East African Community because it has an agenda that is further than mere economic integration. Article five of our treaty says that, ultimately, we shall create a political federation. Therefore, for the EAC, our ultimate target is one authority, one government for East Africa," Museveni stated.

Why is Museveni advocating for one state

The veteran politician explained the nations within the community need to work under one political leadership to achieve their shared goals.

Museveni acknowledged that the goals might be achieved individually, but after a long struggle, affirming that political integration is the only assured path for the region.

"The logic for it is that while we may handle economic prosperity, with just mere economic integration which is also not easy because when you are different countries you can see how long it takes.
Even for economic integration, it will be better if we are one country, but at least you can try. But with strategic security you cannot handle it by merely being in an economic community. The only way you can do it is through political integration," Museveni added.

Museveni claims Raila's clan has roots in Uganda

Earlier, Museveni underscored the importance of unified efforts towards prosperity and strategic security.

He highlighted the strong ties between Kenya and Uganda, noting similarities even in dialects, which he explained share common meanings.

Museveni pointed out that the Luo community traces its origins from Southern Sudan through Northern Uganda, leaving some members in the region.

Notably, he mentioned the Jaramogi community in Uganda's Amuru district, named after Raila Odinga's father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
