Rwanda - At least two students have died following an accident involving a St Matthew School bus in Nyamasheke District.

What caused the St Matthew School bus accident?

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson Emmanuel Kayigi, the accident happened around 3.35pm on Thursday, September 19.

Kayigi said the Toyota minibus, registration number RAH 042T, transporting the students crashed at Ruharambuga Sector, near Kamabuye village. Preliminary investigations show the bus driver was avoiding hitting a bicycle when he lost control and landed in a ditch.

"The driver attempted to dodge a bicycle moving in the same direction when the accident happened. The cyclist is among the injured," said Kayigi as reported by Times News.

According to the police, 32 students were injured and rushed to Kamonyi Health Center and Bushenge Hospital for treatment. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

How 6 students died in Kitui accident

In other sad news, at least six students died following a horrible accident along the Kitui-Kibwezi Road.

Ithitha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Loctary Lomachary confirmed the morning accident on Friday, September 13, saying it happened at the Wiitu Shopping Centre.

Lomachary said the victims include three pupils from Kyaoni Primary School and three from Kyaoni Secondary. The authorities said five of the victims were girls.

Sadly, three of the victims were from the same family.

According to the deputy county commissioner, the learners were knocked down by a Probox vehicle while crossing the road at 6.20am.

Lomachary said preliminary findings from the police showed that the Probox was speeding at the time of the accident.

The Probox driver fled the accident scene before later surrendering himself to Mutomo Police Station.
